Superior Bandwidth Capacity
Service providers can be prepared to stay atop competition, increase customer satisfaction and reduce churn with the most flexible, high-performance system designed to meet the bandwidth needs of today—and tomorrow. The BlackDiamond 20808 switch allows aggregation of residential triple-play services, business E-Line or multi-point E-LAN services and high-bandwidth wireless backhaul services on a common platform. Key capabilities include:
- The industry’s highest port density
- Flexible design to meet growing bandwidth needs
- Longer service life through upgradability and backward compatibility
Scalable Switch Resources
With rich resources that scale, service providers can achieve revenue growth by delivering compelling new services such as streaming video, business E-LAN and E-Line, and mobile backhaul services to both consumers and business subscribers across a large geographical base, all on a single platform. This is achieved in part through:
- Powerful Hierarchical QoS Engine
- Advanced Multicast Scaling
- Efficient Network-to-Network Interfaces
Unmatched Price Performance
The BlackDiamond 20808 switch is a multi-service platform that packs economy, operational simplicity, and scale to allow service providers to offer more services while significantly lowering their CAPEX and OPEX. The BlackDiamond 20808 switch offers an unrivaled combination of performance and affordability to help boost service-provider profitability.
- Low per-Port and System Costs
- Economical Network Expansion Using Layer 2
- Reduced Operational and Management Costs
The BlackDiamond 20808 switch has ten slots, two of which provide control- and data-plane resiliency with redundant management modules. Five (N+1) switch fabric cards are supported, with a maximum capacity of 2 Tbps. Eight I/O slots can be used for a mix of I/O modules, with a maximum bandwidth per slot of 120 Gbps.

Mixed business, residential and wireless backhaul service in suburban or rural geographies
The following configuration highlights the typical deployment in suburban or rural geographies where a smaller number of subscribers are aggregated at each node. In this application multiple 1 GbE or 10 GbE rings are used to cover large areas. There are typically fewer ports facing the customer edge, and only moderate bandwidth demands at the provider edge.

Mixed business, residential and wireless backhaul service in high-density urban geographies
The following configuration highlights the typical deployment in urban areas with a high POP concentration and many subscribers being aggregated close to the provider edge. There are typically many ports facing the customer edge, and the high bandwidth demands at the provider edge make the most of these redundant 10GbE hub-and-spoke deployments rather than EAPS (Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching) rings. These 10GbE connections will likely migrate to a 100GbE provider aggregation and metro core in the future as new applications come on line driving the need for even more bandwidth.
