Trends in Wi-Fi: Managing the Evolving Wireless Network Landscape

There is a revolution taking place in the world of wireless networking solutions.  On Christmas Day 2012, 17.4 million Apple and Android mobile devices were activated. (To put that into perspective, that’s two-and-a-half-times the previous record set on Christmas Day 2011.)

Now, you may be asking yourself: What does this have to do with me? How does this affect my business?

Try looking at those statistics from this angle: Those wireless devices are not just staying at home. Instead, those devices are coming to school and to work, doctors and patients are bringing them along on their trips to the hospital, and retail customers are logging in during shopping trips or while taking a break at their favorite restaurant. In short, anywhere that people go, their wireless devices are going along for the ride.

Ask yourself: Is your wireless network prepared?

While your wireless network may be experiencing more demand now than ever before, the truth is that this just the beginning. Projections indicate that we can expect these figures to continue to skyrocket – resulting in:

  • More users
  • More Device
  • More Traffic Demands
  • More Applications

And what’s the driving force behind this upsurge in usage:

  • Device Proliferation: There are not just more mobile users. Instead, users now have more devices – all with varying operating systems.
  • User Expectation: From downloading apps to voice communications to video conferencing, users now expect to be able to perform the functions they want, whenever they want.
  • Increasing Dependency: Users are becoming increasingly dependent on the convenience of Wi-Fi – meaning that coverage needs to be everywhere, capable of handling video, voice and data.

Unfortunately, most corporate networks are not prepared to keep up with these increasing demands. In fact, it is estimated that over 80% of existing enterprise Wi-Fi networks will need to be upgraded within the next two years.  Adding to the confusion, a recent Sans Interactive Survey is reporting that less than 10% of organizations are fully aware of the devices accessing their networks.
