Top 5 Things I Learned at this Year’s HIMSS Conference

Last week at the HIMSS conference in New Orleans we had the opportunity to spread the word around Enterasys’ increasing commitment to the healthcare market, in which we saw 75% growth in 2012.  We had a great event and I just wanted to share my top five takeaways from the conference.

mHealth: We were privileged to have representatives from our innovative customer Henry Ford Health System on hand to provide a virtual tour of their 5 campus facility, which has over 7 million square feet of Wi-Fi coverage enabling bio-medical device mobility and other mHealth initiatives.  There was also a knowledge center at the show focused solely on mHealth, which was constantly packed with interested attendees.

BYOD: A consistent message from those visiting our booth was around the need to get a handle on the bring-your-own-device trend within their healthcare facility.  Doctors and other care givers are increasingly wanting to use the device of their choice (i.e. iPhone, iPad, Droid, etc.) in providing care for their patients.  This brings up a number of issues around data confidentiality and security.  Along those lines, our strategic MDM technology partner AirWatch was in our booth talking about the benefits of our joint solution to solve our customers’ most pressing issues around BYOD.

High-ranking attendees: Whenever I attend HIMSS, I’m always impressed by the quality of attendees.  People come to the show with an agenda and wanting to learn more about the role of technology in healthcare.  And it is those making the decision (CIO, CMIO, etc.) who are roaming the show floor.

Global Focus: I had a number of conversations with IT leaders from healthcare providers from around the world who wanted to understand how our policy-based approach to networking can help them with key issues such as BYOD. Whether it was Brazil, Israel or the UK, the HIMSS conference is expanding its footprint as the place for healthcare technology leaders to meet each year.

Peer Guidance: Many attendees that visited the Enterasys booth were drawn to discuss how our customer Henry Ford Health System was able to achieve such innovative solutions to mobility, bio-medical device integration, and clinical application support.  By consulting with a successfully deployed Wi-Fi deployment, attendees were able to walk away with a real sense of how wireless connectivity can enable them to overcome many of the challenges inherent to the healthcare environment.
