South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the largest and best known film, interactive, and music festivals anywhere in the world. The event draws over 82,000 participants and takes place every spring in Austin, Texas. Begun in 1987, and named in homage to the Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest, SXSW has continued to build momentum every year. Over 2,000 artists are now featured at the SXSW Music festival. Companies ranging from Foursquare to AirBnB and Twitter have been catapulted to success at the SXSW Interactive Festival. The third event leg, the SXSW Film Festival has proven to be one of the best launching pads anywhere for indie films. Taken as a whole, the SXSW gala at times approaches the transformative communal experience of events like Burning Man.
As SXSW has grown, it has diversified and added events, including SXSW V2V for start-ups, SXSW Eco for sustainability initiatives¸ and most importantly SXSWedu for education stakeholders and practitioners. This year, SXSWedu takes place at the start of SXSW, March 3-6 in Austin. Over 4,500 attendees, drawing from all 50 states, are expected.
Extreme Networks is hosting a panel that will be of special interest to higher education CIOs and IT staff members, entitled CIOs: the Catalyst for Innovation in Higher Education. The members of the panel include Dave Waldron, VP IT at St Edward’s University; Joanna Young, CIO at University of New Hampshire; Phil Komarny, VP of IT & CIO Seton Hill University; and moderator Michael Krigsman, industry analyst and strategy adviser at Asuret. During the session, these CIOs will address ways to harness the economic, technological and market forces that challenge how higher education recruits students, raises money, and delivers services. If you are unable to attend in-person, you may still follow the session on twitter hashtag #SXSWCIO.
To be selected for inclusion at SXSWedu, panel and session proposals must pass a highly competitive crowd-sourced PanelPicker process. The Extreme Networks session proposal came out on top based on votes and further backed up by the judgment of the SXSW advisory boards and the SXSW staff.
Extreme Networks CMO and author Vala Afshar has been invited to host a book signing for his The Pursuit of Social Business Excellence, immediately after the panel at 11:40-12:00 pm in the SXSW Convention Center Bookstore.
