Making Plans To Visit Mars – An Interview with Extreme Hero Kris Farley

David Bowie asked if there was life on Mars, and today’s guest plans to visit the Red Planet soon to get the answer. Because if you combine a passion for what you do, working wisdom, and a vast set of practical skills, you can achieve just about anything. Just like Kris Farley from Carousel Industries – a true Extreme Hero!

If Extreme Heroes were The Avengers, which superhero would you be?

I like the idea of Spiderman personally. I think being one of the younger guys on the team helps fill the gap of a lot of partners nowadays. I like to keep things fresh when talking to clients and people and try to have fun at work. I enjoy cracking jokes and discussing technology with people who are passionate about their work. I love learning from the professionals on my team and figuring out how I can hone my skills to become the best engineer I can!

Being a Hero also means setting a good example. What values drive both your professional and personal life? Do you follow the Carousel’s Customer Success Obsessed’ philosophy closely?

For me, my success comes from the success of others and I think that follows in the path of our philosophy “Customer Success Obsessed” very nicely. When a client needs help with an obscure project and I’m able to do some out-of-the-box thinking with others on my team so that we can come up with a solution that solves the problem efficiently and cost-effectively, it’s a massive success. I think I’ve always been a very big out-of-the-box thinker and I find that Carousel has really helped me nurture that process and improve it so that I can provide the best service to my clients.

Based on your experience, what would you tell your younger self and other up-and-coming system engineers starting their careers in the networking industry?

To anyone new into the systems engineering space… one thing I want to tell them is that people make mistakes. I’ve made mistakes and I probably will continue to do so, but the important part is to recognize those mistakes. Hold yourself accountable, no matter how much it may hurt. Understand why they happened, prevent them in the future. And crack some jokes about them in the future, (once enough time has passed).

Can you recall your first experience with Extreme technology?

I’ll be honest in saying that prior to Carousel I had no idea Extreme ever existed. I had seen the purple switches before, but I had no idea at the time as to what they were. I was interested in learning more about them once I started working at Carousel and after meeting our partner team who helped me get started. I was able to quickly get up to speed on Extreme’s various product offerings and certifications

We hear that you’ve become a true Extreme enthusiast, having built your own home wireless on an ExtremeCloud IQ deployment and always finding new and exciting features. Tell us a little more about that.

Absolutely! I love my Extreme gear, currently, I’m running two 510Cs and an AP630, they’re all tying back to an X440-G2. Really love the speeds and ease of deployment (which, at the end of the day, is all the client really cares about). The feature set on XIQ is seriously powerful and allows for granular tuning of almost every functionality of the APs and my switching environment. I love seeing new updates on the ExtremeCloud IQ environment and how they’re taking feedback from the community in order to improve the design.

We just wrapped up Extreme Connect 2020. Did you enjoy the virtual event?

I really enjoyed the layout of Extreme Connect and the ability to pick which presentations interested me most and then go back and watch those that I missed on-demand. My favorites were the Demo and IT Warrior breakouts, especially the segment on AirDefense and proximity reporting/advanced forensics. I was surprised and impressed at the integration of the existing Extreme portfolio into ExtremeCloud IQ and the speed that these products have been supported in the cloud.
