Supernetworking to Support Supercomputing at SC13

Every year for the past quarter century, the Supercomputing Conference has brought together the entire HPC community – government, academia and vendors. This unique and exciting show has provided a unique environment for collaboration, cooperation and an opportunity to see the latest and greatest.

Part of the overall effort has been to build one of the most powerful networks in the world, SCinet, onsite at the show. This year is no exception and this year, like prior years, it has been a non-trvial effort to build the network.

SCinet will provide all the network connectivity for the show, supporting all the revolutionary, bandwidth hungry applications and demonstrations including big data, supercomputing and cloud computing, all of which are extremely demanding on the networks that they are running over. With attendance expected to be in excess of 10,000 of some of the most connected people on the planet, it is safe to say that SCinet is going to see some pretty heavy use.

The Extreme Networks BlackDiamond X8, our flagship switch, will be at the center of it all, configured as a Deployable Network Operations Center (DNOC) router. Fortunately, with 100GbE connectivity and over 20 Tbps switching capacity combined with low latency and low power consumption, the BlackDiamond X8 is uniquely suited to these and the other challenges that HPC, IPXs and data centers dish out.
